Trieste and Udine are two complementary souls of our beloved region, crossroads of Latin, Slavic, Germanic peoples and cultures. As border zone the region Friuli Venezia Giulia was marked by conflicts in the past, but it was also rich in exchanges of ideas and goods.  Besides, it is an example of beauty in diversity: from the variegated biodiversity of the environment with numerous animal and vegetal species to the diversity of peoples, traditions, foods, costumes.

Trieste - Udine

Trieste

Trieste is a city and seaport in north-eastern Italy with a population of more than 200,000. Its Gulf on the Adriatic Sea lies at the foot of the imposing Karst plateau (nearly 500 meters above sea level). Capital of the region Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trieste is near the border with the Balkan peninsula (Slovenia and Croatia).

In the 19th century, it was the most important port of the MItteleuropa and the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (after Vienna, Budapest, Prague). It emerged as a thriving hub not only for economy (shipbuilding) and trade, but also for literature and music. Today it hosts the International Centre of Theoretical Physics with brilliant scientists from all over the world. The cosmopolitan atmosphere is mirrored in the international cuisine with dishes from Veneto, Friuli, Austria, Slovenia and Balkan and Jewish flavours.

Udine

Udine lies in the middle of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, in north-eastern Italy, between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. Its population is nearly 100,000. This lively town treasures the old residence of the Patriarchs of Aquileia (Palazzo Patriarcale), the church of Santa Maria della Purità (by A. Palladio with frescoes by G Tiepolo), the Venetian-Gothic Loggia del Lionello in Piazza della Libertà (visible sign of the dominion of the Republic of Venice since 1420).

Udine is also a distinguished cultural center with its popular University and its prestigious
"ISIS Malignani".
